Carlisle Area Emergency Response Fund

In mid-March, the Borough joined the United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County to form the Carlisle Area Emergency Response Fund (CAERF). CAERF, spearheaded by Borough Councilor Joel Hicks, addresses and funds emerging health-related needs within our community. “The idea from the beginning was that CAERF would be a way to cut through the red-tape of getting relief to local organizations providing critical public health services to our area," said Councilor Hicks. "Sometimes it just isn’t practical to wait for Harrisburg or Washington, especially for organizations operating on a shoestring budget.”

The CAERF funds distributed cover everything from basic needs such as food, shelter, and hygiene to technology purchases that allow agencies to operate remotely. The funds also assist with transportation for symptomatic patients to get tested, as well as a mobile paramedic providing COVID-19 testing to individuals in nursing homes and shelters.

To date, the CAERF has raised over $113,000. "None of us has ever dealt with the impact of a pandemic, and I would like to congratulate our local nonprofit organizations for stepping up and working countless hours to revamp their policies and procedures to account for many new demands," said Borough Councilor Deb Fulham-Winston. "As you make plans for your charitable contributions, please consider that your gift to the CAERF fund will be used locally to support the entire community."
