TRC Commission Plans "Thinking About Race Thursday" Events

The Borough of Carlisle’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) will host a series of events called “Thinking About Race Thursday,” which are designed to interact with the community and listen to stories from those individuals impacted and traumatized by systemic racism in the Borough.  Events will be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month, to coincide with Borough Council’s meeting schedule.

The TRC was born out of a community town hall on racial equity held in January. Over 100 individuals attended the event to share stories, ask questions, and highlight issues of racial inequity in the Borough. The TRC’s mission statement commits the group to improving racial justice and racial equity by engaging the community in truth-telling and reconciliation. The TRC also examines policies and practices that contribute to systemic racism and develops guidance for Borough officials about the next steps for making the community more just and equitable.

The “Thinking About Race Thursday” events will serve as a way for the TRC to hear directly from individuals in the community who have been impacted by systemic racism. At these meetings, the community will also be able to learn more about the TRC’s goals and progress and ask questions of the members. These efforts are designed to build trust and form relationships with community members whose voices have been silent for too long. While the purpose of these meetings is not to solve every issue, the TRC will offer resources and suggestions where appropriate.

“The ‘Thinking About Race Thursday’ events will have both short- and long-term effects on the commission’s work,” said TaWanda Stallworth, TRC Co-Chair. “We are not just information-gathering for our final report to the Borough, but we are engaging with residents and letting the community know we are here to help in real-time when feasible. Hearing their personal stories and anecdotes puts human faces to the work we are doing.”

The first “Thinking About Race Thursday” will be held on Thursday, December 9, at 6:00 p.m. in the conference room at Borough Hall, 53 West South Street. Individuals will also have the opportunity to participate in the sessions via Zoom using the login information below. While the first meeting will take place at Borough Hall, the commission would like to host future events at different venues where people feel comfortable speaking their truth. The TRC is also planning a second community Town Hall for January 15 to update the community on its progress. More details on the Town Hall Event will be forthcoming.
