Since 2020, USDA Wildlife Services has been in communication with the Borough of Carlisle to discuss managing the vultures and their associated damage within the borough. In 2025, USDA Wildlife Services was requested to become involved with active management of vultures and the issues caused by the presence of vultures within the Borough of Carlisle.
"Managing Vulture Damage Within The Borough of Carlisle" Informational Sheet
The purpose of this informational sheet is to inform the public of the damage and health risks associated with having an overabundant established vulture population and provide an outline of the integrated vulture damage management program requested by the Borough of Carlisle.
The main goal of the integrated vulture damage management program is to disrupt the local roosting population that currently causes property damage, disease concerns, and unsanitary conditions throughout the borough. Wildlife Services employs safe and practical techniques to manage the vulture population in an effort to reduce damage and health risks within the borough.
USDA Wildlife Services and the Borough of Carlisle are working together to create a healthy environment for both wildlife and the public. The goal of our integrated vulture damage management program is not to eliminate the vulture population, but simply to manage the active population in the region to a biologically and socially acceptable level and relocate the roost to a location that will cause the least damage and conflict. The focus of the integrated vulture damage management program within the Borough of Carlisle is to disrupt the local roosting population, which is causing property damage, disease concerns, and unsanitary conditions throughout the borough, while ensuring that the environment and the public will still benefit from the valuable habits of the vultures.
The residents of the Borough of Carlisle are a valuable part of the integrated vulture damage management program. You are requested to remove outdoor pet food and household waste that may attract vultures.
If you are experiencing damage caused by vultures, please contact the Borough’s Department of Parks and Recreation at 717-243-3318 or parksandrec@carlislepa.org. Your property may then be included in the program and receive its benefits through March 9, 2027.
