Borough of Carlisle to Accept Army War College Class of 2019 Gift During Annual Haines-Stackfield Event at Hope Station
On Monday, May 27, 2019, the Haines-Stackfield American Legion Post 826 will hold their annual Memorial Day Observance Ceremony at Lincoln Cemetery located at Memorial Park, 149 West Penn Street, Carlisle.
As part of this year’s ceremony, the Borough of Carlisle will accept a gift from the United States Army War College Class of 2019. The Borough formed a working group comprised of Jordan descendants (the family of the remaining stone in the cemetery); the USAWC Class of 2019; Hope Station; and, Borough staff and elected officials to determine what form the gift would take. The group decided on an archway leading into Lincoln Cemetery. The archway is the beginning of potential improvements to this area to include paying homage to the site’s historical significance as a burial ground for African Americans in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, including Civil War veterans and community leaders. More significantly, to rededicate the cemetery as a sacred place of reflection and create an opportunity for truth, racial healing, and transformation.
The Borough of Carlisle encourages residents and interested parties to attend this ceremony. A reception will be held at Haines-Stackfield immediately following the service.
Note: In the event of inclement weather, the service will take place inside the Haines-Stackfield American Legion, 148 West Penn Street, Carlisle.
